Peer2Peer: A Critical Internet Studies Reader is a collection of essays edited by Stacy E. Wood, written by researchers, artists, archivists, and makers, who are thinking collectively and critically about the Internet. The pieces presented are derived from presentations given at the Peer2Peer: Critical Internet Studies Gathering in LA that was held at FCCW, hosted by UCLA’s Center for Critical Internet Inquiry in 2025. About The Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2)

The Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2) was founded by Drs. Safiya Noble and Sarah T. Roberts as a direct outgrowth of their groundbreaking work on algorithmically driven bias and commercial content moderation. As graduate students, they struggled to find support for their work - their methods and theoretical interventions touched the edges of the fields that informed them. They wanted to create a place for scholars, activists, researchers, policymakers, artists and anyone struggling to find community in their critical work on technology and a space to hold big tech accountable and for advocating for a multivocal vision for a different internet that served and responded to people and their needs.

Since its inception, C2i2 has launched a doctoral fellowship, a micro-granting program, public programming and publishing efforts. It has contributed to much-needed curriculum development, responded to calls from public officials for guidance on pressing issues and tried to provide a platform for urgent work that places community at the center of conversations on technology. 

In 2025, C2i2 hosted its first Peer2Peer gathering in partnership with the Feminist Center for Creative Work (FCCW), a program free and open to the public that featured emerging scholarship, participatory workshops and artistic interventions. What came out of this was a clear desire for more - more ways to connect, share and collaborate. The stakes couldn’t be higher. As we witness further consolidation of power and influence by tech companies and personalities - there is increasing concern from a broader section of the public about surveillance in our communities, the enablement of violence and environmental degradation at both local and global levels, the erosion of human dignity and job security, and the reckless attitude toward the public as a living lab for tech experimentation. 

This reader, edited by C2i2 Director of Research and Programs Dr. Stacy E. Wood, is a record of our first Peer2Peer. We hope that the work contained within makes you want to connect with your community, ask questions about how technology influences and affects your life and inspires you to share your own contributions - they are urgent, they are needed and they have a home at C2i2.
